A Beautiful Sunrise!

A wonderful clear morning sunrise - the sun pouring in through the windows!  It feels so strong and warm!!  Of course my heat is on!  The wind chill is 28 degrees F, -2 C and we finally have a temperature down close to freezing.  Projections are that the temperature will go to freezing the next four nights or so: Sunday (tonight) to 0 C, Monday 1 C, Tuesday 0 C, and Wednesday 1 C, by Thursday we will go up to a balmy low of 3 degrees C (that's 37 degrees F)  YEAH!!!  Some really cold weather finally!  Laughing - nothing like what you have in Colorado, Iowa and Wisconsin, THAT'S for sure!!!  Laughing!  By the way, the highs starting today are anticipated to be 41, 41, 39, 42 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively (that's 5, 5, 4, 6, and 8 C).

I see that you are having a reprieve there in Iowa - at least from the ice, sleet and snow, maybe it's all that HOT AIR that is being blown about!!!  As Emily Litella used to say .... NEVER MIND!

At ALTA: They're up to 73" of great snow base (since 75" was hit once and the snow has continued to fall without a significant rise in temperature, excellent conditions and base for the beginning of the year) - 10" fresh and still snowing.  In fact, I can't see anything but snow really in the Mountain cams!  Right before sunset...  Nice.

HAH!  Just received: POWDER ALERT!!

Update at 5:00 pm Saturday December 29th:  We received 7" of new snow today, 10" in the past 24 hours.

For tonight, we are expecting 4-6" of new snow.

The settled snow depth is 73" and we have received 198" of snow this season.

CHEERS - only 26 days before I leave for Salt Lake City!!!  Lots of fun here before then, of course!  Midterm exam in my three classes - Money and Banking (actually Financial Institutions and Markets but fairly close to M&B, just more focus on the Instruments so far - like we just did mortgages and points yesterday - the Monday class on Saturday!  I also threw in some valuation of a stock of their choice from the MBA classes - multiples and supergrowth models).
Today I will relax - last night was the late Monday night coming back from Zha Bei, but I will do some grading and may organize a bit for the midterm.  Also I need to do a bit of studying of Chinese for class - only 57 yuan (SILC pays for half) for my first 3 lessons - I missed one week due to being sick (never miss teaching though - just always manage to get up for that!).  That's the intro class, I also do the advanced class.  I understood a WHOLE LOT more on Thursday, she mostly speaks in Chinese but has backed of a bit for us!

Currently listening to KUNI - one of my favorite radio stations.  They play lots of music at night - especially Bob Dorr and his show (from the Blue Band, those of you in Iowa).  He does a "Backtracks" show - old music (I think they call it classic music?!?), and also a homegrown Iowa show - both lots of fun!  Yes, quite amazing to have a great broadband connection so that I can listen real time to radio (and of course call family and friends on Skype!).

OK - let's see what kind of picture I can find ... grinning ...

In People's Square is a great public park (many people here want to speak English), on Nanjing Rd. West, Gate 5:

Yes, the Civilized Park!  Laughing! Right in the middle of the Puxi (Huang Pu river west) part of downtown Shanghai.

So you might wonder HOW does he find his way walking through downtown Shanghai where there are tall buildings everywhere and often you can't find a sign, with Chinese characters blaring out at one everywhere?  Well, I just look for Tomorrow's Square, highlighted by the J. W. Marriott Building, which is absolutely distinctive (see below).  The building is a very short walk from Chengdu Rd. which is where we catch the Hu Jia Special Line Bus to Jia Ding (9 yuan or about $1.30 for a 35 minute straight bus ride up the express highway (the toll is 10 yuan!).

A beautiful day on Renmin Guangchang (People's Square).
