Long Bar - The Portman Ritz Carlton Shanghai

Last night was Matthew's birthday party at Zao Zi Shu (Vegetarian Lifestyle/ Jujube Tree).  The directions were to:

Tell the taxi drive "Nanjing Xi Lu Meilong Zheng"
The restaurant is in the lane directly behind the Meilong Zheng shopping centre on the corner.

Have you ever tried to tell a taxi driver to go to Nanjing Xi Lu (West Nanjing Road) and Meilong Zheng?  Neither had *I*,  and LUCKILY I didn't have to.  However, even the two friends that I was with, who SPEAK Chinese, showed the driver the Guanxi Hanzi (Chinese characters) for the directions (cell phones are wonderful inventions)!

'Twas quite awesome - from the vegetarian pork skewers to the vegetarian squid (which DID taste like squid) to the jiaozi and xiao long with no pork, etc.!!  WOW - there were ten of us and we were stuffed!  Quite amazing.  Matthew is a "mostly" vegetarian - he is willing to eat some shellfish, but Chris and his wife, Monika are strict vegetarians.

Very nice change in food, run by some Buddhist monks I was told so NO alcohol at ALL!  Cheap too - 54 rmb!  We HAD to take food home (they do NOT like food wasted).

Then we walked to the Long Bar just connected to The Portman Ritz-Carlton!  OK, THIS PLACE WAS NOT REALLY IN SHANGHAI - I mean the Ritz is but the feeling was of a totally out of this world little city.  You wouldn't need to go anywhere else for anything.  (Link to Smart Shanghai info and OF COURSE a link to the hotel Protman Ritz Carlton itself, just in case you're interested.) Everything is underneath huge open and cavernous areas and, of course, VERY EXPENSIVE!  Now what ISN'T expensive in Shanghai, but then $5 for a ginger ale ... that's what Matthew was drinking - he had two and of course we wouldn't let him pay!  For 7 of us, the bill was 560 yuan - so about $80!

THAT'S why I came to China, to spend money in a land of contrasts!!  Oh, and by the way, ... the bar was almost packed.  We had seats but in the back "kinda", one doesn't go to the Ritz to be private, eh?!!?  However, we weren't REALLY right out there!  The waitresses were mostly Filipino - very interesting, yes and beautiful!
