The 7.8 earthquake in Sichuan is a long way from here in Shanghai.   One of my students let me know at 3:00 pm during break that there had been a quake in Sichuan (Eagle is his name - of course!).  The earthquake happened at 2:38 so we knew about this one immediately and Vice Premier Wen Jiabao was there already  last evening.  Comments were made that this is the fastest the government has moved, related to other disasters and the 1976 Tongshan quake most likely.

Anyway, we are fine here in Shanghai and I have been told that earthquakes do not happen here.  Hmmm...

There was also a later quake in the Beijing area of 3.9, they evacuated but that was minor, no doubt.
