Productivity Revision - 2008, Same Story as Real GDP - HUGE!
I hope at some time to find out why, but the revision on the 4th Quarter was VAST - Real GDP, Consumption, and now Productivity and Unit Labor Costs!!!
Productivity from + 3.8% to - 0.4% ... Something smells, eh?
Here is the News Release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics complete with very nice graphs, which they won't let me copy (boo hoo!)!!
OK, I have taken a quick view and still don't quite get the revision information but will continue to examine the data. Unit labor costs increased by 5.4%!!! Now that seems wildly out of whack!!! Productivity falls but cost of labor increased?!!? (Read that worked less intensively but were paid more - now maybe, JUST MAYBE, that makes up for some of the time that we worked harder but were NOT paid more for that work?!? Statistics - very interesting!)
That can NOT be sustainable! A decrease in Labor Productivity and an increase in costs is impossible to sustain for any business firm! Finally, we heard TONS from "Certain sectors" crowing about the increase in productivity - dudes, wait until the revisions, eh!!! Yes, Larry - tell me what's going on here, eh?
