MAY DAY - International Labor Day - The 8 hour work day

My Second May 1st in Shanghai, the first year I posted my initial findings and thoughts here.

I was chatting with my students in class the other day (Tuesday), right before the exam while waiting for more questions and I had to laugh with them.

In America, we do not celebrate the Haymarket demonstration when 200,000 workers decided to "take a day off" but our average work week is around 33 hours.

HERE in China, we celebrate International Labor Day, yet I know of no one here who works only 8 hours!!!   Laughing!!

Most Chinese work two or three jobs!! (OR they own their own companies - which means you work MANY, MANY more hours!)

There creates a large amount of workaholics for various reasons. Some male employees work for providing good educations or luxuries for their children or wives.Others think that they should make great efforts to the office in order to make progress in their careers. In my view, such people should be labeled on the "advanced workers" due to their contributive soul.
