Vacation, AGAIN?!!? Yes and more!
Ah, yes - the school year comes back around to International Worker's Day (first year) again - that day which USED to include a week long holiday in China (one of the three Golden Weeks). However, China's government decided that the transportation system, the economic system, and the financial system needed a little different schedule. So now we have only one day free, Monday, May 3 (this year). It has been three years but many Chinese are still used to the old system.
However, the Shanghai government decided that the whole city needed more time off due to Expo 2010, so they granted us Friday and Tuesday as holidays too!!! OK, so that makes for a 5 day weekend!!!
Now, SHANGHAI UNIVERSITY said we can't be missing TWO Mondays (Qing Ming Jie or Tomb Sweeping Day on April 5 was the first), therefore Thursday (May 6) is Monday!!! Yes the universities can do such in China - change the day, just like that!
So that just WIPED OUT my week totally. The Midterm week gone!! (Couldn't give the exam on Thursday night of the 5th week, no one, and I mean NO ONE, was left at the university when *I* left on the SILC bus at 4:45, let alone be there to do a test at 6 pm - HAH! I knew this a long time ago, which meant a new plan needed to be formed! I have been working on these plans for 3 weeks now - laughing!)
SO, I am making the students take a 4 pm to 6 pm, Friday afternoon exam on May 5!! (One of my colleagues already took the 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm test for the same students on the same day!!) Heck, our students have no classes all week (for me) and a 5 day weekend so the students really can't complain! (HAH, students can ALWAYS complain - I KNOW - I DID!!! Laughing!)
